Our Journey
2018
Darartu received a 10k grant through Davis for Peace to run a 3-week menstrual health education program. With the grant, Darartu worked with a local nurse to lead workshops for over 100 students in Kofele, Ethiopia. The students also learned how to sew reusable pads using everyday cloth, needles, and a thread. Through this project and talking to community members in Kofele, Darartu learned that period poverty was an issue that needed to be addressed
2019
Bilisummaa was founded. Bilisummaa champions freedom and dignity for menstruators by addressing period poverty through education, advocacy, and the distribution of menstrual health supplies. Every month, Bilisummaa partners with local clinics and organizations to provide health education and period kits.
Bilisummaa expands their mission, including new initiatives in Minnesota to ensure that menstruators everywhere have access to the resources they need to manage their periods confidently and freely.
